The Supreme Court issued an important ruling in support of women’s reproductive rights, unanimously upholding access to the abortion medication mifepristone. This ruling followed a long legal dispute over the FDA’s clearance of the drug, which is used in more than 60% of abortions in the United States. Mifepristone, widely known as RU-486, is a drug used to end early pregnancies. The FDA approved the medicine in 2000, and since then, millions of women have used it to end unwanted pregnancies. However, anti-abortion groups disagreed with the FDA’s clearance, claiming that the agency failed to follow required protocols in authorizing the medicine.
