49ers’ Ricky Pearsall in Stable Condition After Attempted Robbery Shooting in San Francisco

A juvenile suspect is in custody following an alleged shooting that left San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall wounded during an attempted robbery on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Pearsall, 23, was shot in the chest and is currently in stable condition at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, according to San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Geary Boulevard in the Union Square area as Pearsall walked alone.

The Incident

The suspect, identified as a 17-year-old male from Tracy, California, reportedly approached Pearsall with a gun in an attempt to rob him. A struggle ensued, during which the suspect’s firearm discharged, striking both Pearsall and the suspect. Multiple shots were fired, according to Chief Scott.

Officers in the vicinity responded immediately, administering emergency medical aid and apprehending the suspect. The suspect was also transported to San Francisco General Hospital; however, his condition has not been disclosed.

A firearm believed to belong to the suspect was recovered at the scene, and authorities believe he acted alone. “This kind of violence is simply unacceptable in our city,” Chief Scott stated, emphasizing the department’s commitment to working closely with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins to ensure justice is served.

Legal Proceedings

District Attorney Jenkins announced that her office expects to make a charging decision by Tuesday or Wednesday, with initial charges likely to be filed in the juvenile court system. She assured the public that the case would be handled with the seriousness it warrants.

Reactions and Support

The San Francisco 49ers released a statement confirming Pearsall’s injury and condition, describing it as serious but stable. The team requested privacy for Pearsall and his family and expressed their unwavering support. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family,” the statement read, reaffirming the team’s commitment to Pearsall’s recovery and future with the 49ers.

49ers teammate Deebo Samuel shared his relief on social media, posting, “He’s good. Thank God!!!!” on X, previously known as Twitter.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed also addressed the incident, reaffirming the city’s stance against violence. “Robberies and any violence like this will not be tolerated in our city,” she said, praising the swift action of the first responders and hospital staff. Her words echo the sentiments of the entire community, united in their support for Pearsall’s recovery and their rejection of such violence.

Pearsall’s Career and Future

Pearsall, a first-round draft pick by the 49ers in April, has faced challenges since joining the team, including hamstring and shoulder injuries that have limited his participation in training camp. Despite these setbacks, Pearsall has shown remarkable resilience and determination, and he has been expected to play a significant role as a backup to starters Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.

Before his professional career, Pearsall was a standout player at Arizona State and later at the University of Florida, where he recorded 65 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns in his final season.

As Pearsall recovers, the 49ers and their fans remain hopeful for his return to the field and a bright future.
