Lionel Messi will miss Inter Miami’s upcoming matches due to a ligament injury in his right ankle, the team announced on Tuesday. The 37-year-old, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner got injured during Argentina’s 1-0 win over Colombia in the Copa America final in Miami.

Incident During the Match

Messi went down in the 64th minute and needed extended treatment after signaling to the bench. He removed his right boot and walked off slowly, attempting to continue playing. However, he was later seen covering his face and sobbing on the bench with ice on his swollen ankle.

Medical Evaluation

“After a medical evaluation, it has been determined that Leo Messi has suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle,” stated the Argentinean FA. “His availability will be determined by periodic assessments and recovery progress.”

Coach’s Statement

Inter Miami coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino expects Messi to miss at least two matches. “He twisted his ankle, and we need to wait for test results,” Martino said. “Our kinesiologist, Walter Insaurralde, who also works with the national team, is very cautious about giving a final diagnosis before results are in.”

Upcoming Matches

Inter Miami, second in the Eastern Conference standings, will face Toronto FC on Wednesday and the Chicago Fire on Saturday.

Messi’s Performance and Recovery

Messi has 12 goals and 13 assists in 12 MLS matches this season, marking his first full campaign in MLS. He reassured fans on Instagram, stating, “I’m fine, thank God, and I hope to return to the field soon,” while also paying tribute to outgoing teammate Angel Di Maria.
