Patriots Captain Jabrill Peppers Arrested on Assault, Strangulation Charges

Patriots captain and safety Jabrill Peppers was arrested over the weekend following a domestic disturbance at a home in Braintree, Massachusetts, police confirmed on Monday. The 29-year-old faces multiple charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a Class B substance believed to be cocaine.

Details of the Incident

Braintree police responded to an altercation between Peppers and a woman early Saturday morning. According to court records, Peppers allegedly shoved the woman to the ground, pushed her head into a wall, and strangled her by placing his hands around her neck. The woman, identified as Peppers’ girlfriend, was treated for injuries to her face and knees at the scene.

Peppers was arrested and later posted a $2,500 bail. His arraignment took place on Monday in Quincy District Court, where he was also charged with possession of a Class B substance. Peppers’ next court date is set for November 22, though he has been allowed to waive his appearance.

Defense Claims Evidence of Doubt

Marc Brofsky, Peppers’ attorney, argued during the arraignment that there is substantial doubt regarding the allegations against his client. Brofsky claimed that the case includes videotaped evidence, which could challenge the prosecution’s assertions. Peppers has agreed to avoid contact with the woman while the case progresses.

Patriots’ Response

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo addressed the situation, stating that the team is still gathering information. Despite the arrest, Peppers will be allowed to access the team’s facilities for the time being.

“We don’t know enough to say he shouldn’t be in the building,” Mayo said, adding that the matter has been addressed with the team to serve as a learning experience.

The Patriots re-signed Peppers to a contract extension earlier this summer. In his third season with the team, Peppers was originally drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2017 and later played three seasons with the New York Giants. He has been dealing with a shoulder injury and did not participate in the Patriots’ 15-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Mayo confirmed that the team was made aware of the arrest on Saturday, though Peppers’ status with the Patriots moving forward remains uncertain.
