Amnesty International Accuses Israel of Genocide in Gaza War, Sparking Global Controversy

Amnesty International has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza during its ongoing conflict with Hamas, alleging intentional efforts to destroy the Palestinian population. In a report released Thursday, the organization cited deadly military actions, destruction of essential infrastructure, and restricted aid access as evidence of genocidal intent. The report called on Israel’s allies, including the United States, to cease arms shipments, warning of potential complicity.

“Our damning findings must serve as a wake-up call to the international community: this is genocide. It must stop now,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s secretary general.

Israel Rejects Genocide Allegations

Israel has categorically denied Amnesty’s accusations, calling the report a “blood libel” and accusing Hamas of carrying out genocidal attacks. The Israeli Foreign Ministry dismissed the findings as “fabricated” and maintained that its military operations are lawful and target Hamas, not civilians.

“The deplorable and fanatical organization Amnesty International has once again produced a fabricated report,” the ministry stated.

U.S. and Global Reactions Split

The United States called Amnesty’s genocide allegations “unfounded” while emphasizing the importance of human rights organizations in addressing conflict repercussions. Amnesty International Israel, the local branch of the organization, publicly distanced itself from the genocide claims, highlighting internal disagreements within the group.

Prominent global voices, including Pope Francis and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have also called for investigations into Israeli actions in Gaza. Despite these claims, Israel’s key allies, including Germany, have defended its actions as self-defense while urging improved humanitarian access.

Devastation in Gaza

The war has resulted in over 44,500 reported deaths, the displacement of 90% of Gaza’s population, and widespread infrastructure destruction. Amnesty alleges Israel has inflicted conditions designed to destroy Gaza’s population over time, citing targeted airstrikes, forced evacuations, and severe restrictions on essential supplies.

Israel counters these claims, attributing civilian casualties to Hamas’ use of residential areas for military operations. It also accuses the United Nations of failing to distribute humanitarian aid effectively in the territory.

Call for International Action

Amnesty International called on the United States and other arms-supplying nations to exert pressure on Israel to halt its military campaign, warning of escalating humanitarian and legal crises if the conflict continues.
