Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an election victory as his coalition has secured more than half of the parliamentary seats, although votes are still being counted.

This positions Modi to potentially win a third consecutive term, a milestone not achieved by any prime minister in over 60 years.

The announcement follows a six-week-long election in which nearly 1 billion people were eligible to vote.

Modi, speaking at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in New Delhi, stated, “The National Democratic Alliance is going to form the government for the third time, we are grateful to the people. This is a victory for the world’s largest democracy.”
