Israeli Military Orders Evacuation in Gaza’s Humanitarian Zone

On Monday, the Israeli military directed the evacuation of a section within Gaza’s designated humanitarian zone. This action precedes an operation targeting Hamas militants using the area to launch rockets into Israel. The specified area is the eastern part of the Muwasi zone in southern Gaza.

Palestinian Displacement:
Palestinians have faced repeated displacement during Israel’s military campaign. Recently, Israel reported that 1.8 million Palestinians are within the 14-kilometer humanitarian zone along the Mediterranean. This zone, filled with makeshift tent camps, suffers from poor sanitation and limited medical facilities, according to U.N. agencies. Families endure harsh conditions, living among waste and contaminated water.

Cease-Fire Negotiations:
The evacuation order comes amid ongoing cease-fire negotiations. U.S. and Israeli officials are optimistic about reaching an agreement. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office confirmed a negotiating team will continue discussions on Thursday. Efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. aim to establish a phased cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

Netanyahu’s U.S. Visit:
Prime Minister Netanyahu departed for the U.S. to meet with President Biden and address Congress. Emphasizing the enduring alliance between Israel and the U.S., Netanyahu plans to thank Biden for decades of friendship and seek further support on key issues.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza:
The conflict has resulted in over 38,900 deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The war began on October 7 with a Hamas attack on southern Israel, which killed 1,200 people and led to about 250 hostages. Approximately 120 hostages remain, with a third believed dead.

Worsening Conditions:
Gaza’s humanitarian situation has deteriorated, with polio detected in sewage samples due to failing water and sanitation services. No polio cases have been treated so far. The Israeli military announced vaccinations for soldiers and plans to work with organizations to vaccinate Palestinians.

Hostage Crisis:
Netanyahu has pledged to dismantle Hamas’ capabilities and secure the hostages’ release. Weekly protests by families of hostages urge the prime minister to achieve a cease-fire to bring their loved ones home.
