Jimmy Carter Marks Historic 100th Birthday Amid Tributes and Celebrations
Former President Jimmy Carter is celebrating a significant milestone, becoming the first former president in United States history to reach his 100th birthday. This achievement comes as Carter continues to receive hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he has been since February 2023.
Despite the personal loss of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, in November 2023, the former president’s resilience shines through. Carter attended her memorial service in a wheelchair and remains determined to stay engaged in civic life, expressing his desire to live long enough to vote in the upcoming elections.
A Presidential Tribute
President Joe Biden shared his heartfelt birthday message, stating, “On behalf of the entire Biden family and the American people, Happy 100th Birthday!” He praised Carter as “a moral force for our nation and the world … and most of all, a beloved friend.” Carter has expressed his intention to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris, and early voting is set to begin soon in Georgia.
“I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris,” Carter reportedly told his family.
Remarkable Resilience in Hospice Care
Carter has lived far beyond the typical length of time spent in hospice care. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average time for hospice care is around 63 days. Still, Carter has been under hospice care for more than 19 months, a testament to his strength and resilience.
Celebrating a Legacy of Service
In honor of his centennial, more than 4,000 attendees gathered at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre for a special benefit concert, Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song. The event raised funds for international programs supported by The Carter Center, which Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter co-founded. These programs focus on issues such as health, peace, and democracy and have made a significant impact globally. The concert was a fitting tribute to Carter’s humanitarian work, which has defined his post-presidency legacy.
“Everyone here is making history,” remarked Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter. “This is the first time people have come together to celebrate the 100th birthday of an American president, a testament to the enduring impact of President Carter’s legacy and his continued commitment to public service.”
A Life of Service
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter’s early life was rooted in humble beginnings. The son of a peanut farmer and a nurse, he was the first future president born in a hospital. Carter went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. He served in the Navy before returning to run his family’s farm.
In 1970, Carter was elected governor of Georgia, and in 1977, he was inaugurated as the 39th president of the United States. His presidency was marked by significant challenges, including record-high inflation and the Iranian hostage crisis, which dominated the final stretch of his administration. The hostages were released on the day Carter left office in 1981.
A Beloved Former President
Although challenges marred his presidency, Carter’s post-presidency has been filled with humanitarian efforts, making him more popular in his later years. He has been actively involved in building homes with Habitat for Humanity and advocating for democracy and public health around the globe.
As Jimmy Carter celebrates his 100th birthday, the world reflects on a life devoted to public service, human rights, and compassion. The celebrations surrounding his centennial serve as a reminder of the profound impact Carter has made both in and out of the White House.
