Brazil’s President Urges Respect for Venezuelan Election Results

Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has called on Venezuela’s government to respect the outcome of next Sunday’s election, voicing concerns over Nicolás Maduro’s warnings of potential violence if he loses.

Maduro’s Alarming Statements

Venezuela’s leader, Nicolás Maduro, in power for 11 years, is trailing opposition candidate Edmundo González in polls. Recently, Maduro and his allies have suggested post-election violence if the ruling party doesn’t win. On Monday, Lula emphasized the need for fair elections.

Emphasizing Democratic Process

“I have told Maduro that Venezuela must have a widely respected electoral process,” Lula said. “He must respect the democratic process.”

Election and Background

Maduro, who succeeded Hugo Chávez, won a narrow victory in 2013 and faced criticism for his 2018 re-election. At a recent rally, he stated that Venezuela’s future depended on his re-election. “To avoid a bloodbath and civil war, let’s ensure the greatest victory in our electoral history,” he urged.

Brazil’s Role in Monitoring

Lula, usually reserved in his criticism of Maduro, said he was “frightened” by Maduro’s threats. He announced that former foreign minister Celso Amorim and two Brazilian electoral court members would observe the election.

Concerns Over Election Fairness

In May, Venezuela revoked the European Union’s observer invitation, raising doubts about the election’s fairness. Numerous arrests of González’s campaign associates, including the brief detention of security head María Corina Machado, have exacerbated these concerns.

Lula’s Stance on Democratic Integrity

“If Maduro wants to help Venezuela return to growth and stability, he must respect the democratic process,” Lula asserted.

Comment on US Politics

Lula also praised US President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election, expressing confidence in the democratic process. “Now, the US will choose a new candidate, and may the best one win,” Lula wrote, affirming Brazil’s strategic partnership with the US.
