Patti Scialfa Reveals Battle with Blood Cancer in New Documentary

Patti Scialfa, wife of Bruce Springsteen and long-time member of the E Street Band, has publicly shared her battle with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer. In the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Scialfa disclosed that she was diagnosed with the illness in 2018, during Springsteen’s celebrated Springsteen on Broadway residency.

Scialfa, 71, has been a part of the E Street Band since 1984, bringing her signature vocals to the forefront during the legendary Born in the USA tour. Despite her diagnosis, she continues to perform when possible, though the disease has made touring more challenging. In the documentary, she reflects on her experience, stating:

“This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful about what I choose to do and where I choose to go. Every once in a while, I come to a show and sing a few songs, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me, and I’m OK with that.”

Challenges on Tour

The impact of multiple myeloma, which affects plasma cells in the bone marrow, has required Scialfa to be selective about her appearances with the band. Though largely absent from the ongoing world tour, she cherishes the moments she can join her husband and their bandmates on stage.

Springsteen himself has faced health struggles during this tour. In 2023, he postponed several shows due to treatment for peptic ulcer disease and later rescheduled others on the advice of doctors following vocal issues.

Enduring Partnership

Scialfa and Springsteen’s creative and personal partnership has spanned decades. They married in 1991 and share three children. In the documentary, she touches on how performing together provides audiences a glimpse into their relationship’s dynamic, something typically unseen.

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and offers an intimate look at the band’s touring life, Springsteen’s dedication to performing, and the physical challenges the couple has faced. Despite these hurdles, the documentary underscores their unwavering commitment to music.

The film will be available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+ from October 25.

A Story of Resilience

Though Scialfa’s battle with cancer continues, her occasional performances on stage reflect her resilience and dedication to music. The documentary serves as a reminder of both her quiet strength and the enduring power of the E Street Band, even in the face of health challenges.
