Pope Francis Calls for Investigation Into Potential Genocide in Gaza

Pope Francis has urged an investigation into whether Israel’s military actions in Gaza constitute genocide, according to excerpts from an upcoming book. This marks the first time the pontiff has openly suggested examining genocide allegations linked to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

In September, Francis condemned Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon as “immoral” and disproportionate, asserting that the military had exceeded the rules of war. His comments in the new book signal a more definitive stance on the issue.

The book, Hope Never Disappoints: Pilgrims Towards a Better World, written by Hernán Reyes Alcaide, is based on interviews with the pope and is set for release on Tuesday, ahead of the 2025 Jubilee Year. The yearlong celebration is expected to draw over 30 million pilgrims to Rome.

“According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide,” the pope said in excerpts published by La Stampa. “We should investigate carefully to determine whether it fits into the technical definition formulated by jurists and international bodies.”

Diplomatic Sensitivities and Prior Meetings

Last year, Francis met separately with relatives of Israeli hostages in Gaza and Palestinians affected by the conflict. His use of terms such as “terrorism” and, reportedly, “genocide” sparked controversy, as these words are typically avoided in Vatican diplomacy. He has consistently emphasized the suffering of both Israelis and Palestinians.

The pope’s call for an investigation comes during a conflict that began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 hostages. In retaliation, Israel initiated a military campaign in Gaza, leading to over 43,000 deaths, according to Gaza health officials. The officials report that a majority of the casualties are women and children.

Global Legal Implications

The conflict has spurred numerous legal cases in international courts, involving allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Calls for accountability have intensified as international bodies examine the humanitarian impact of the extended violence.

Advocacy for Global Cooperation

In the same book, Francis addresses broader global challenges, including migration and integration. He criticizes restrictive immigration laws, urging for a “globalization of charity and cooperation” instead of the “globalization of indifference.”

Francis also highlights the refugee crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, stressing the need for compassion and collaborative solutions to address the displacement of thousands.

The pope’s remarks underscore his role as a global moral leader, challenging world powers to prioritize humanitarian consequences. His call for an investigation into potential genocide in Gaza is expected to ignite both support and criticism, amplifying debates around justice and accountability in the conflict.
