Pope Francis Receives Oxygen Therapy but Remains Stable, Vatican Reports
Vatican Says Pope Is Resting Without Respiratory Failure
Pope Francis, 88, remained in stable condition on Wednesday, with no signs of respiratory distress, according to the Vatican. Officials confirmed that he spent the night resting peacefully into Thursday.
Ongoing Medical Treatment and Respiratory Support
The Vatican press office reported that the pontiff underwent high-flow oxygen therapy throughout the day. Additionally, noninvasive mechanical ventilation was set to continue overnight to assist his breathing. Doctors have also implemented respiratory physiotherapy and motor therapy to aid in his recovery.
Observing Ash Wednesday from the Hospital
Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis actively participated in Ash Wednesday rituals. Seated in an armchair, he received the Eucharist and took part in the blessing of the Holy Ashes as they were imposed upon him by the celebrant.
Balancing Recovery with Papal Duties
Earlier in the day, Pope Francis made a phone call to Father Gabriel Romanelli, the parish priest serving the Holy Family in Gaza. The Vatican also noted that he alternated between rest and work throughout the afternoon.
