Sweden’s Worst Mass Shooting Leaves 11 Dead, Five Seriously Wounded
At least 11 people were killed, including the gunman, in Sweden’s deadliest mass shooting, which took place at an adult education center west of Stockholm. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as at least five individuals remain in serious condition following the attack.
Gunman’s Motive Remains Unclear
Authorities have yet to determine the shooter’s motive, as the Scandinavian nation—where school gun violence is rare—struggles to process the scale of the tragedy. The carnage was so severe that early reports indicated difficulty in identifying the number of victims.
Victims Undergoing Treatment
Officials confirmed Wednesday that three women and two men, all suffering from gunshot wounds, underwent surgery at Orebro University Hospital. While their injuries were life-threatening upon arrival, they are now in serious but stable condition. Another woman sustained minor injuries and remains stable.
All victims are over the age of 18, and no additional patients linked to the shooting were admitted overnight, hospital officials said.
Shooting at Campus Risbergska
The attack took place at Campus Risbergska, an adult education center offering primary and secondary-level classes for individuals aged 20 and older. The institution also provides Swedish-language courses for immigrants, vocational training, and programs for people with intellectual disabilities.
Located on the outskirts of Orebro, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Stockholm, the campus became a scene of panic as students sheltered in nearby buildings and police evacuated sections of the school.
National Leaders Express Grief
Sweden’s Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer condemned the attack, calling it “an event that shakes our entire society to its core.” Meanwhile, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the Royal Palace and government buildings. Officials scheduled a news conference for Wednesday morning.
Gunman Acted Alone, Say Police
Authorities confirmed that the suspected shooter was among the dead. Roberto Eid Forest, head of local police, told reporters that there were no prior warnings and that the perpetrator acted alone.
While it remains unclear whether the gunman was a student at the school, police emphasized that they do not suspect terrorism at this time.
Police Raid Shooter’s Home
Following the attack, police raided the suspect’s home, though they have not disclosed any findings. The Prime Minister, addressing reporters late Tuesday, urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue.
“Today, we have witnessed brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people,” Kristersson said. “This is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. Many questions remain unanswered, and I cannot provide those answers either.
“But the time will come when we will know what happened, how it could occur, and what motives may have been behind it. Let us not speculate,” he added.
A Rare Tragedy in Sweden
While gun violence in Swedish schools is extremely rare, the country has seen several attacks involving knives or axes in recent years. Authorities are now grappling with the worst school shooting in Sweden’s history, as the nation mourns the victims and demands answers.
