Trump Revokes Biden’s Security Clearance, Citing ‘Poor Memory’ Report
Donald Trump announced he is “immediately revoking” Joe Biden’s security clearances, a move that mirrors Biden’s decision to strip Trump of intelligence access four years ago.
Biden Revoked Trump’s Clearance in 2021
Traditionally, former presidents retain access to intelligence briefings after leaving office. However, in 2021, shortly after his inauguration, Biden revoked Trump’s access, citing concerns over his “erratic behavior.” At the time, Biden questioned the value of briefing Trump, telling CBS News, “What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?”
Trump Cites Hur Report in Decision
Trump’s decision to revoke Biden’s access follows the release of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report, which described Biden as having a “poor memory.” Trump pointed to these findings in a statement on Truth Social, writing, “The Hur Report revealed that Biden suffers from ‘poor memory’ and, even in his ‘prime,’ could not be trusted with sensitive information. I will always protect our National Security — JOE, YOU’RE FIRED.”
A spokesperson for Biden has not yet commented on the revocation.
Pattern of Revocations Under Trump
Trump’s move is part of a broader effort by his administration to revoke security clearances from past officials. Last week, the Pentagon removed the security detail of retired Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley and suspended his clearance. Similarly, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Adviser John Bolton have had their security details revoked by Trump.
Trump defended his decision, arguing Biden “set this precedent” by stripping his own clearances in 2021. “Biden took my clearances away for political reasons,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Now, he must live with the same rules he put in place.”
Biden was investigated by Hur for allegedly mishandling classified materials after leaving the vice presidency, but prosecutors declined to bring charges.
